Focal length determines your field of view, not your zoom power
Focal length, measured in millimeters, describes how wide or narrow a lens's field of view is — lower numbers (like 16mm) capture more of a scene, higher numbers (like 200mm) capture less but make distant subjects appear closer. It's tempting to think of a higher number as simply 'more zoom,' but the more useful way to think about it is field of view: wide lenses are for landscapes and interiors, long lenses are for isolating a distant or small subject.
A 'kit lens' bundled with most camera bodies typically covers a versatile but unremarkable range (commonly around 18-55mm or similar). It's a fine starting point, but it's usually the first thing photographers replace once they know what they actually shoot most.
Aperture (the f-number) controls light and background blur
A lens's maximum aperture, written as an f-number like f/1.8 or f/4, controls two things at once: how much light reaches the sensor, and how blurred the background appears behind your subject. Confusingly, a lower f-number means a wider opening — f/1.8 lets in more light and produces more background blur than f/4.
Lenses with a wide maximum aperture (f/1.8 or wider) are often called 'fast' lenses, and they're particularly valued for portraits, low-light shooting, and anything where a blurred background helps the subject stand out.
Prime vs. zoom: the real tradeoff
A prime lens has a single fixed focal length (no zooming) and typically offers a wider maximum aperture, sharper images, and a lower price than a zoom lens covering the same focal length. The tradeoff is that you physically move to reframe a shot instead of zooming.
A zoom lens covers a range of focal lengths in one lens, trading some combination of maximum aperture, sharpness, or price for that flexibility. For most beginners, a single versatile prime (commonly a 35mm or 50mm equivalent) is a better second-lens purchase than a zoom, because it teaches you to think about framing rather than relying on zooming to fix composition.
What to buy first, in order
If your kit lens already covers a normal walk-around range, the highest-value second lens is usually a fast prime in the 35-50mm equivalent range — versatile enough for portraits, low light, and everyday shooting, and a genuinely different look from a kit zoom. After that, buy toward whatever you're missing: a longer telephoto if you shoot sports or wildlife, a wider lens if you shoot interiors or landscapes, or a macro lens if you shoot small subjects up close.
